Birthday Parties
So you decided now to have the party at home. What theme do you use?? Well you just ask your child. They will usually have a definite idea on what theme they want, or at least a couple of ideas.
This is where your local dollar store comes in so handy. Before the advent of the dollar store it was expensive even to have parties at home.

This one is always a hit with the boys. What I did was to make a treasure chest out of a cardboard box. I then went to the local dollar store and picked up eye patches and hook hands. Then I got some red material from the local fabric store and cut into squares for bandannas for their heads. What decorations we couldn't make we bought, but we also made some skull and crossbone flags to hang up. These were fun to make and get your child involved in their party. When the kids showed up they picked their costume out of the treasure box. Games for this one were pretty easy. We had a treasure (scavenger hunt). Another great games is walk the plank. You just place a board on the ground and blindfold the child whose turn it is to walk the plank. You can make up your own variations of this one.

I know that it is easier to book a place to hold a birthday party
and I myself do that once my children reached the age of ten. I have to tell
you that this has not been easy, because my children have always loved their
home birthday parties and it took a lot of convincing with each one to have
the party elsewhere. What's important is that they have fun memories to look
back upon, not the amount of money you have spent!
If you are on a budget, and I know that most people today are, birthday
parties held at home are a great alternative to spending the money and
booking a place. The big hit at our parties has always been the home made
cakes. I know you are probably thinking that this is too hard for the simple
cook. Well, I can tell you that with a little imagination and a package or
two of cake mix, you can make the most fun cakes.
Here is a cake
recipe that was a huge hit at our parties
Snake Mountain Cake
Ingredients2 packages chocolate cake mix
4 cans of chocolate frosting
1 package of oreo cookie crumbs rubber snakes and bugs, washed
Directions
There was one year our stove was broken so I had to buy a cake for my daughter's birthday. I got one at our local safeway. The them that years was princess. I then went to the dollar store and bought all kinds of baubles and rings to decorate the cake. Each girl got a couple of rings and a necklace with their slice of cake. It was a big hit
II have to admit that it gets a little hard to top the previous year's cake.
